Words become pictures become signs: Stefan Marx—whose typefaces are found ranging across building facades and skateboards, ephemera and gallery walls—has adopted a new medium for our edition I Love You Lots More Than You Know. As weatherproof, outdoor advertising signs, enamel signs enjoyed great popularity in the first half of the 20th century. Today they enjoy cult status again, especially among artists. Deprived of their original function, the sign becomes an object as well as a surface for Stefan Marx’s typical intellectual games, which are characterized by nonchalance and a great sense of the poetic.
Over the past 20 years, STEFAN MARX (*1979 Schwalmstadt, Germany) has lent his unique handwriting to a variety of media: paper, canvas, porcelain and textiles. He publishes artists' books and zines, designs record covers for various labels, and shows his work in international exhibitions, at art book fairs and galleries. Marx lives and works in Berlin.
