Cloth is a lithograph printed directly onto individually hand-painted heavy linen canvas. A cut-out in one-to-one scale, Cloth hangs as though on a hook, mimicking the object it depicts. The strong red color signals presence whilst drawing attention to the high formal abstraction of its lines, which disappear into illusionary folds, folding artificially into the real world around it. A seemingly ordinary subject, well-used and unfussy; an object like this would normally vanish into the invisibility of the everyday. Decontextualised and re-presented, Appel brings it into striking visibility, revealing its essential qualities as an aesthetic object.

Die Edition thematisiert das Genre des »Trompe-l’oeil« und konzentriert sich auf das Textil und die ihm zugehörige Stofflichkeit. Geschickt und sehr präzise verknüpft die Künstlerin hier gleich mehrere Ebenen miteinander, wozu die Präsentationsform gleichberechtigt Beitragende ist.
Cloth ist eine Lithografie, die direkt auf individuell handbemalte schwere Leinenleinwand gedruckt wird. Als Ausschnitt im Maßstab 1:1 hängt "Cloth" wie an einem Haken und ahmt das abgebildete Objekt nach. Die kräftige rote Farbe signalisiert Präsenz und lenkt gleichzeitig die Aufmerksamkeit auf die hohe formale Abstraktion der Linien, die in illusionären Falten verschwinden und sich künstlich in die reale Welt um sie herum falten. Ein scheinbar gewöhnlicher Gegenstand, gut benutzt und schnörkellos; ein Objekt, welches normalerweise in der Unsichtbarkeit des Alltäglichen verschwinden würde. Durch die Dekontextualisierung und Neupräsentation bringt Helene Appel es in eine auffällige Sichtbarkeit und enthüllt seine wesentlichen Qualitäten als ästhetisches Objekt.

HELENE APPEL (*1976, Karlsruhe) hat in Hamburg an der Hochschule für bildende Künste und am Londoner Royal College of Art studiert. 2011 erhielt sie das Goslarer Kaiserringstipendium, 2019 das zweijährige Dorothea-Erxleben Stipendium an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
