Based in Berlin and Oslo, the German-Norwegian artist Yngve Holen (*1982 in Braunschweig, Germany) first gained notoriety for his sculptures made combining traditional materials with contemporary production techniques, which address our relationship with the objects that surround us.
In his large solo show HEINZERLING in Oslo and Stavanger, he made a link to the subjects of nature and tradition, while on a more personal level referring to those factors from which we construct identity. For just as the exhibition title HEINZERLING is Holen's German family name, it is of course also listed in his Norwegian passport. This question of a constructed link between home, tradition, and culture is picked up in the works Olav's Rose, which Holen has made for the Edition Hatje Cantz. On four aluminum plates each, the Olavsrose is depicted on reflective sheeting in yellow/black or black/yellow and red/black or black/red. In Norway, this folk art ornament serves to designate cultural heritage that is protected but explicitly still in active use. With Holen, it is a tongue-in-cheek reference to his art and cultural production and at the same time a formal link to his Rose Painting, Snowflake, or Leichtmetallrad series, which also engage with the issue of ornament.

Bekanntheit erlangte der in Berlin und Oslo lebende deutsch-norwegische Künstler Yngve Holen (*1982 in Braunschweig) durch seine in Kombination von traditionellen Materialien mit zeitgenössischen Produktionstechniken geschaffenen Skulpturen.
Sie thematisieren das Verhältnis des Menschen zu den ihn umgebenden Objekten.
Mit seiner großen Einzelausstellung HEINZERLING in Oslo und Stavanger schlug er den Bogen zu den Themen Natur und Tradition, um gleichzeitig auf einer persönlicheren Ebene auf diejenigen Faktoren zu verweisen, aus denen wir Identität konstruieren. Denn so wie der Ausstellungstitel HEINZERLING Holens deutscher Familienname ist, steht er natürlich auch in seinem norwegischen Pass.
Diese Frage nach einer konstruierten Verknüpfung von Heimat, Tradition und Kultur greifen die Arbeiten Olav’s Rose auf, die Holen für die Edition Hatje Cantz geschaffen hat. Auf je vier Aluminiumplatten ist in Reflektorfolie in Gelb/Schwarz bzw. Schwarz/Gelb sowie Rot/Schwarz bzw. Schwarz/Rot die Olavsrose zu sehen. In Norwegen dient dieses Ornament aus dem Bereich der Volkskunst zur Kennzeichnung denkmalgeschützten, jedoch explizit in aktiver Nutzung befindlichen kulturellen Erbes. Bei Holen ist es ein augenzwinkernder Verweis auf seine Kunst- und Kulturproduktion und gleichzeitig formaler Link zu seinen sich inhaltlich ebenso um das Thema des Ornaments drehenden Werkgruppen Rose Painting, Snowflake oder Leichtmetallrad.
YNGVE HOLEN (*1982, Braunschweig), norwegisch-deutscher Herkunft, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er wurde mit dem ars viva-Preis 2014/15 und dem Robert-Jacobsen-Preis 2017 ausgezeichnet. Sein Werk ist international in zahlreichen institutionellen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen vertreten.
