Peter Downsbrough (*1940 in New Jersey) studied art and architecture and, like Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, and Lawrence Weiner, is one of the artists who continue to use the book as another space to present their work. Since the early seventies, he has incorporated text and line drawings into his books, later integrating maps and photos of urban spaces. His consistent and sharply delineated oeuvre is devoted to examining the meaning of “space.” In 1993, the publisher, book collector, and curator Guy Schraenen commented the following on Downsbrough’s publications: “We could talk about the zero degree of the book, since it presents itself here in its simplest form.”

Peter Downsbrough (*1940, New Jersey) studierte Kunst und Architektur und ist gemeinsam mit Robert Barry, Sol Lewitt und Lawrence Weiner einer der ersten konzeptionell arbeitenden Buchkünstler.
Seit Anfang der 1970er-Jahre verbindet Downsbrough Text und Strichzeichungen in seinen Büchern, später kamen Landkarten und Fotos vom städtischen Umfeld hinzu. In seinem konsequenten und scharf umrissenen Œuvre untersucht er die Bedeutung von »Raum«. Bereits 1993 schrieb der Verleger, Buchsammler und Kurator Guy Schraenen über die Veröffentlichungen des Künstlers: »Man könnte sie den absoluten Nullpunkt des Buchs nennen, denn es zeigt sich hier in seiner einfachsten Form.«
Das Buchobjekt, das Peter Downsbrough für diese Edition kreiert hat, verbindet ganz typische Elemente seiner Arbeit: Eine handgefertigte Box enthält unter anderem eine Konstruktionszeichnung und das »Baumaterial« für einige Linien und Schriftzeichen und damit für Grundbausteine der Buchkunst.
