Gert and Uwe Tobias (*1973 in Brasov, Romania) have created an international furor with their larger-than-life-sized woodcuts and unconventional typewriter drawings. For their latest project, the two artists have taken up a special challenge: their Dresden Paraphrases reinterpret outstanding prints from the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs in Dresden, describing a unique kind of cultural transfer between ennobled historical masterpieces and a current stance in international contemporary art.
Gert and Uwe Tobias availed themselves of, among other things, copper engravings by the Master of the Playing Cards from the mid-fifteenth century, virtuoso chiaroscuro woodcuts by Ugo da Carpi from the early sixteenth century, engravings by the so-called Dresden Chinoiserie from the early eighteenth century, and last, but not least, the revolutionary panel works of Hermann Glöckner from the thirties.

Dresden Joker by this pair of artists is a wonderful example of their sophisticated woodcut technique. The multicolored print is assembled from several sheets of paper, and the numbering for this exquisite, very limited edition can be seen in two of the corners.
