The wood sculptures by Stephan Balkenhol, one of Germany’s most important sculptors, are as tangible in the public space as they are in the public consciousness. His figures of humans and animals, usually chiseled out of poplar, populate streets, squares, and office corridors as if they were simply part of the environment; succinct and, at the same time, apparently inconspicuous, these sculptures are almost otherworldly.

We are very pleased to be able to offer you an extraordinary work by Stephan Balkenhol, as one of our Collector’s Editions. Using a kind of embossing technique, prints known as “aqua-gravures” can be made from a wooden relief carved by the artist. The prints are pulled by Bernard Pras, Paris, the inventor of this special technique. Balkenhol then colored each of these prints by hand. The aquamarine blue eyes of the young man in this image seem to look at the viewer very directly and questioningly.
