Michael Reisch

Michael Reisch (*1964 in Aachen) lives in Düsseldorf.

Studied art in 1985 at the Stadsacademie voor toegepaste Kunsten, Maastricht, and from 1986 to 1991 at the Gerrit-Rietveld-Academie, Amsterdam, majoring in photography and sculpture, graduated in 1991. Studied with Bernd Becher in 1991 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Recipient of numerous awards and grants.

What do we mean when we talk about landscape? Real landscapes? Or imaginary landscapes, in which real landscapes combine with media images of landscapes and artificial, animated landscapes from video games to form a single construct?

In his works, Michael Reisch creates a single image of landscape, which seems partly real, partly fictional. The photographer first uses a large-format camera to take pictures of industrial complexes and houses, but mostly of landscapes. He then digitizes the slides and then processes them once again on a computer. He makes sure to remove all traces of civilization, makes detailed corrections in color, and sometimes intervenes a great deal in the structure of the composition. These “invented” landscapes oscillate, as Reisch himself says, “between Paradise and a genetic science nightmare.”

For this Collector's Edition Reisch has created a landscape comprised of a series of soft hills ranging into the depths of the image—as Rolf Hengesbach puts it, “Desire and alienation enter into . . . an indissoluble connection.”
