Nikki S. Lee (*1970 in Kye-Chang, Korea) lives and works in New York.
1993: BFA, Chung-Ang, College of Arts, University of Korea. 1996: AAS, Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. 1999: Master’s Degree in Photography from New York University. 2002: Grant from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Numerous solo exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad.
In her Parts project, artist Nikki S. Lee presents fragments of photographs. It is as if the women in the photos – each representing a specific social group, which Nikki S. Lee portrays with striking perfection herself – had cut away the images of their ex-boyfriends or husbands when the relationships ended. Yet all of the women in these pictures clearly refer through gestures or gazes to their now missing partners, exposing obvious patterns of interaction. Like actors in plays or films, they are perfect and immediately recognizable personifications of their respective roles as wives, lovers, or partners for a night. As incomplete images that reveal only parts, the photographs also expose the fragmented psychological structures of these women.

Lee allesamt mit beeindruckender Perfektion selbst darstellt – nach dem Zerbrechen der Beziehung ihre Ex-Freunde oder Ex-Ehemänner aus den gemeinsamen Erinnerungsfotos getilgt und weggeschnippelt. Bezeichnenderweise beziehen sich alle präsentierten Frauen in Blicken und Gesten stark auf diese jetzt fehlenden Partner und lassen so überdeutlich Beziehungsmuster erkennen. Wie in Theaterstücken oder Filmen verkörpern sie perfekt und sofort erkennbar ihre jeweiligen Rollen – oder parts – als Ehefrau, Geliebte oder Mädchen für eine Nacht. Nicht nur die Fotografien sind und zeigen nur Teile, auch die psychische Struktur der Frauen vermittelt sich damit als defizitär.
