Christine de la Garenne/Via Lewandowsky
Neobiota

Christine de la Garenne (* 1973 in Karlsruhe) lives and works in Berlin. 1994–2000: Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe.

Via Lewandowsky (* 1963 in Dresden) lives and works in Berlin. 1982–87: studies in art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden. 1991/92: fellowship of the Berlin Senat, PS 1, New York. 1994: fellowship at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada.

During a four-month stay in Beijing, Christine de la Garenne and Via Lewandowsky completed a collection of 120 photographs featuring ordinary objects and situations that seemed particularly exotic to them. Neobiota is a biological term used to describe non-native species that have invaded a geographical area as a result of either direct or indirect human action. This not only alters the environment, but also the new arrival, which must also adapt and change. De la Garenne and Lewandowsky explore daily life in China from a foreign perspective and at the same time see themselves and their own lives in a new way.

Our limited Collector’s Edition contains an especially atmospheric image from the project, featuring two boys performing gymnastics on the horizontal bars.
