Between 2003 and 2006 Beatrice Minda photographed apartments in her homeland of Romania, as well as in exile in France and Germany. The photographs often feature the temporary accommodations of Romanian migrant workers, tacked together out of boards and sheets of plastic, in the suburbs of Paris. In them, Minda’s attention is drawn to the places where Romanian domestic culture continues to survive, to spaces which have the feeling of home.
In this series, the photographer not only reflects upon the issues of homeland, exile, and collective identity, as well as the personal and political history of a country. Minda’s search is at the same time a personal voyage intérieur to the origins of her own identity, which unites the experience of alienation and familiarity.
Our Collector’s Edition features a living room filled with a wonderfully atmospheric light, photographed by Minda in 2004 in Bucharest.

Beatrice Minda hat zwischen 2003 und 2006 Wohnungen von Rumänen in ihrer Heimat sowie im Exil in Frankreich und Deutschland fotografiert. Auch auf den Bildern, die oft nur aus Holzlatten und Plastikfolien gezimmerte Behelfsunterkünfte von rumänischen Wanderarbeitern in den Vororten von Paris zeigen, gilt Mindas Augenmerk dem Bereich, in dem die rumänische (Wohn-)Kultur fortlebt, sich der Duft der Heimat auszubreiten scheint.
In der Serie reflektiert die Fotografin nicht nur Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von Heimat, Exil und kollektiver Identität, von persönlicher und politischer Geschichte eines Landes. Mindas Spurensuche ist zugleich eine persönliche »voyage intérieur« zu den Ursprüngen der eigenen Identität, welche die Erfahrung von Fremdheit und Vertrautheit vereint.
