Spätestens seit der Auszeichnung mit dem Goldenen Löwen der Biennale Venedig 2001 gilt Gregor Schneider als herausragender Künstler – mit einem überaus rätselhaften Werk. Hier verpflanzte er Elemente aus seinem Haus ur in Rheydt in den deutschen Pavillon der Lagunenstadt. Der Schritt über die Schwelle, der Blick hinter die großmächtige Kulisse des Portals führte in die Tiefen, ja Abgründe des Ichs.
