The human body as a fragment, a ritual, and a vessel of transformation

Benedikt Hipp is one of the most intriguing voices in contemporary art. His bilingual monograph Songs from the Orbs offers a captivating insight into an artistic practice that spans ceramics, painting, and video.

A highlight of the book is Hipp’s experimental work with self-built high-temperature wood-fired kilns, producing ceramics of striking intensity. His art explores the fragility and transformation of the human body—as fragment, hybrid creature, and social ritual. Documenting important exhibitions and works from recent years, this publication opens a new perspective on Hipp’s artistic universe.

Richly illustrated and thoughtfully written, the volume provides a fresh understanding of the relationship between body, art, and culture—a must-have for collectors, art enthusiasts, and scholars of contemporary art

Benedikt Hipp (*1977 Munich) lives and works in Finning. Since 2007, his works have been shown in numerous national and international group and solo exhibitions (including the Triennale Kleinplastik Fellbach, Haus der Kunst Munich, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Palazzo delle Esposizioni Rome, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, CAPC Bordeaux, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum Ludwigshafen, Kunstpalais Erlangen, Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen). In 2020/2021, Hipp was the winner of the Rom Prize and a scholarship holder at the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome. There, he realized permaculture projects dedicated to increasing biodiversity in the park of Villa Massimo.
