In his photographs Just Loomis (*1957 inReno, Nevada) shows us an honest, blunt perspective of everyday American life. As a former assistant and friend to Helmut Newton, he worked as a fashion photographer for magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine in the 1980s, but in later years devoted himself more and more to portrait and documentary photography.
Our Collector’s Edition The Birdman is of an older man in profile; he is surrounded by seagulls on the beach at Santa Monica , and seems to be in a very contemplative, concentrated mood. This kind of atmosphere requires that there be great trust between the photographer and the subject, and it reflects Loomis’s sensitive, attentive view of his fellow men. “He understands them, as he comes from the same place. These pictures are without artifice of any kind... I call them a perfect example of Americana.” said June Newton.
